If you are looking for a something to keep your kids entertained this winter, you have to try this Snowstorm in a Jar experiment.
We are currently in the midst of a winter storm here in the Midwest. We are expected to get about 10-13 inches of snow and the wind is howling which means lots of drifting. According, to my friends in the south and west of us, the forecasters aren’t lying. And it’s supposed to be bitterly cold. All of this means that the kids probably won’t have school…and we also have another one coming in later this week.
Our school system has started implementing elearning. Thanks to COVID, we didn’t have a choice. I am thankful that our superintendent just decided to do every other day an elearning day. Yes, I would rather be out of school when its sunny and warm, but I feared my kids would never get to enjoy an actual snow day ever again. A day where you can just play in the snow and come inside and sip hot chocolate while watching a movie! I may be regretting this decision when its sunny and warm and I want my kids to be out of school, but for now I’m okay with it.
So, the since there’s a snowstorm outside, the girls and I decided to make our own snowstorm inside!
Snowstorm in a Jar
You will need:
A jar
water
Begin by filling the jar about 1/4 of the way with water.
Next, add in about a teaspoon of white acrylic paint and stir. You want it to be about the color of milk, so if it isn’t add just a little bit more paint.
Add the baby oil to the jar until it is filled to the neck of the jar.
Wait for the water and pain to settle to the bottom of the jar, then break up the Alka-Seltzer tabs into small pieces (we got about 3 from one tablet) and start putting them in the jar and watch the snowstorm begin.
Once it settles, you can add more tablets and do it again.
We did this activity when my girls were younger and they liked it so much we decided to do it again.
This is also a great little science experiment whether you are homeschooling, a teacher, or just like doing fun experiments with your kids.
