It’s Fall and that means apple pickin’ time. Grab the family, head to the orchard, and pick some apples to make this Easy Crockpot Applesauce.
I love to make homemade applesauce every year. Our neighbor is the designated “apple tree keeper” in the area and he always has a ton of apples to giveaway. He also makes the most delicious apple cider. Instead of heading to the orchard to pick apples, we just head over to his shop and pick some apples there.
Applesauce doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s actually very easy to make. My kitchen aid mixer attachment that peels the apples makes it even easier!
I’ve always made applesauce by cooking the slices over the stove, then running them through the food mill. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this method. In fact, in this method, you don’t have to peel the apples, so maybe it is faster. I don’t know. You can find that recipe by clicking here. However, I recently discovered that you can make applesauce in the crockpot and it made my life so much easier! I don’t have to sit and babysit the apples on the stove while they soften. I can peel, slice and put in the crockpot and go about my day while the crockpot does all the work!
Easy Crockpot Applesauce
You will need:
3-5 pounds apples, more or less (I use any kind of apple although, I tend to stay away from Red Delicious and Honeycrisp. No real reason, I just do. Some just take more sugar than others.)
1/2 Cup sugar, or more depending on taste
1-2 teaspoons cinnamon, or more depending on taste
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup water
Begin by peeling the apples. If you have this kitchen aid mixer attachment, it will make this job a lot easier. It’s not perfect, but definitely helps get the job done faster!
Slice the apples into generous size pieces and place in crockpot. You can fill the crockpot all the way to the top with apples. I like to use my 6 quart crockpot.
Add about 1/4 Cup water to the apples and about 1/2 Tablespoon lemon juice and give them a good stir.
Next stir in the sugar and cinnamon. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours. Stir and mash with a potato masher to desired consistency. You can add more sugar and cinnamon at this point depending on taste. Let cool in fridge, then spoon into freezer bags, or freezer containers and enjoy all year long!
Applesauce is great with any meal! The kids will love making applesauce with the apples they picked at the apple orchard.
