Are you looking for a cookie with a little bit of spice and a little bit of sweetness? Look no further then these delicious Molasses Sugar Cookies!
These cookies are an old family recipe. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure this recipe has been around for a while and several people out there already have it, but this was my husband’s Aunt Mary’s recipe and I have it in my recipe binder (Yes, I have a 3-ring binder with all my recipes in it because I couldn’t fit them all in my recipe box. Plus with the internet, most of my recipes are printed anyway and they don’t fit too well in a box. ) Anyway, this recipe is handwritten in my husband’s grandmother’s writing, so that is definitely something to treasure. You don’t see very many handwritten recipes anymore and I kind of miss that!
The holiday season is a great time to break out the recipes that have been handed down from generations, like these Molasses Sugar Cookies. Plus they have the perfect amount of ginger and cloves in them that makes them a great spice cookie to serve during the holidays.
Molasses Sugar Cookies
You will need:
3/4 Cup butter flavored shortening
1 Cup sugar
1/4 Cup Brer Rabbit Molasses (I’m sure you can use other kinds of molasses, but when a family recipe calls for a specific brand, you best be using it!)
1 egg
2 teaspoon baking soda
2 Cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
Begin by melting the shortening in a small saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and let cool.
Add sugar, molasses, and egg to a bowl and mix well.
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, soda, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and salt. Slowly add to the molasses mixture. Mix well.
Chill for about 20 minutes.
Form in to 1″ balls, roll in sugar and place on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper or lightly greased.
Bake at 350 degrees for 8-9 minutes.
